๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Adjustable wrench
- โ Flathead screwdriver
- โ Sponge
- โ Bucket
- โ Tongue-and-groove pliers
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Universal toilet flapper
- โ Toilet fill valve replacement kit
- โ Rubber tank-to-bowl gasket washers
- โ Absorbent shop towels
- โ Food coloring
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Shut off the water supply valve completely before disconnecting any plumbing hardware to prevent room flooding.
- โข Do not overtighten porcelain bolts, as excessive torque will crack the ceramic tank or bowl.
- โข Wipe up spilled water immediately to prevent slipping hazards around the work area.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Diagnose the Leak Location
Remove the tank lid and place 4-5 drops of dark food coloring directly into the tank water without flushing. Wait 15 minutes to see if colored water seeps into the bowl, indicating a deteriorated flapper or flush valve seal. Inspect the external supply line, shutoff valve, and tank-to-bowl mounting bolts with a dry shop towel to detect exterior moisture.
- โข Colored water appears in bowl if flapper leaks
- โข Dry towel confirms external joint locations
- โข Flushing during the dye test, which invalidates the leak check
- โข Ignoring hairline cracks in the porcelain tank or base
Shut Off Water and Drain Tank
Turn the oval supply valve handle clockwise behind the toilet until it stops turning. Press and hold down the flush lever to empty the bulk of the water from the tank into the bowl. Use a large sponge to press into the remaining pool at the base of the tank, wringing out the collected water into an empty bucket until bone dry.
- โข No standing water remaining in the bottom of the tank
- โข Supply line produces no hissing or trickling sound
- โข Failing to fully seat the shutoff valve, leading to slow refilling during disassembly
- โข Leaving residual water that spills onto the floor when parts are unbolted
Replace the Flush Valve Flapper
Unclip the flapper lift chain from the flush handle trip lever arm. Slide the side mounting ears of the old flapper off the pivot pegs on the central overflow tube. Mount the replacement universal flapper onto the pegs, clip the chain to the flush arm with roughly 1/2 inch of slack, and verify it seals centered over the valve seat.
- โข Flapper drops completely flat over the flush orifice
- โข Chain has slight slack without dragging or catching
- โข Leaving the chain too tight, preventing the flapper from fully dropping onto the seat
- โข Leaving excessive chain slack, which catches under the flapper edge during flushes
Replace the Fill Valve Assembly
Place a bucket directly under the water inlet shank beneath the tank. Loosen the supply line coupling nut, then unscrew the large plastic mounting locknut securing the fill valve shank to the bottom of the tank. Insert the new fill valve with its rubber cone washer seated inside the tank, thread the plastic nut underneath hand-tight, and secure with an extra quarter-turn using tongue-and-groove pliers.
- โข Fill valve base sits vertically without wobbling
- โข Rubber shank washer is compressed firmly against the internal tank bottom
- โข Installing the rubber sealing washer on the outside of the tank instead of the inside
- โข Overtightening the plastic locknut, which splits the washer or cracks the plastic threads
Service Tank-to-Bowl Bolts and Gasket (If Leaking at Base)
If external leaks originate from between the tank and bowl, locate the two brass mounting bolts inside the tank. Hold the bolt head inside with a flathead screwdriver while unthreading the hex nuts from underneath using an adjustable wrench. Carefully lift the tank off the bowl, replace the large central spud washer and rubber bolt washers, then reinstall the tank, tightening both sides evenly until snug.
- โข Tank rests level on the bowl without rocking
- โข Rubber washers form an even seal without protruding irregularly
- โข Tightening one bolt completely before the other, which tilts the tank and cracks the porcelain
- โข Reusing compressed or degraded old rubber washers instead of installing fresh components
Reconnect Supply Line, Restore Water, and Test
Thread the braided water supply hose onto the fill valve threaded shank hand-tight, followed by a light quarter-turn with an adjustable wrench. Slowly open the wall shutoff valve counterclockwise, allowing the tank to fill until the water stops roughly 1 inch below the top of the overflow pipe. Perform three test flushes while inspecting all connection points and the bowl perimeter with a dry paper towel for any signs of leaking.
- โข Water line stops precisely 1 inch below the overflow rim
- โข Paper towel remains bone-dry when wiped around all fittings and base bolts
- โข Cross-threading the plastic fill valve inlet with the metal supply line nut
- โข Opening the water valve too rapidly, creating a water hammer shock in the plumbing
