๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Kettle or large saucepan
- โ Measuring cup
- โ Funnel
- โ Sink stopper or wet washcloth
- โ Safety glasses
- โ Rubber cleaning gloves
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Baking soda (1 cup)
- โ Distilled white vinegar (1 cup)
- โ Boiling water (6-8 cups)
- โ Liquid dish soap (2 tablespoons)
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Never combine this natural method with commercial chemical drain openers like Drano; mixing can create toxic gases or violent chemical eruptions.
- โข Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses to protect against hot water splashes and acidic vinegar mist.
- โข Pour boiling water in a slow, controlled stream directly into the drain to avoid thermal shock to porcelain basins or scalding splashback.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Clear Standing Water from Basin
Scoop out any standing water in the sink basin using a cup or bowl until the drain opening is exposed. Remove the sink strainer basket and wipe away any loose food debris sitting on top of the drain flange. The drain pipe needs to be relatively dry and accessible for the dry powder to reach the clog.
- โข Sink basin is completely dry with no standing water pooled around the drain
- โข Drain strainer basket is removed and set aside on the counter
- โข Pouring dry baking soda into deep standing water where it dissolves before entering the pipe
Funnel Baking Soda Down the Drain
Place the funnel directly into the center of the drain opening. Pour exactly one cup of dry baking soda through the funnel so it drops directly into the trap below rather than spreading over the sink basin. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to gently nudge any stuck powder down through the crosshairs.
- โข One full cup of white baking soda powder is inside the drain throat
- โข Sink basin surface remains clean and free of loose powder
- โข Dumping baking soda without a funnel, leaving most of it stuck to the metal sink basin
Add Vinegar and Seal Immediately
Pour one cup of distilled white vinegar directly into the drain over the baking soda. The mixture will immediately begin to sizzle and foam vigorously. Instantly press the sink stopper or a damp folded cloth firmly over the drain opening to force the expanding carbon dioxide gas down toward the clog rather than up into the room.
- โข Audible fizzing sound trapped beneath the sealed drain opening
- โข Stopper or damp rag firmly held down over the drain mouth with zero foam erupting into the basin
- โข Waiting too long to cover the drain, allowing the cleaning pressure to escape upward into the basin
Allow Reaction Dwell Time
Keep the drain tightly plugged and let the chemical reaction sit undisturbed for 15 minutes. During this period, the effervescent acetic acid reaction softens congealed animal fats, soap scum, and captured food particles clinging to the pipe walls. Meanwhile, fill a kettle with 6 to 8 cups of water and bring it to a full rolling boil on the stove.
- โข Sink remains sealed with stopper in place and undisturbed for 15 minutes
- โข Kettle on stove is producing steady steam indicating boiling water is ready
- โข Rinsing the drain immediately without giving the chemical reaction time to dissolve the fats
Flush with Boiling Water
Remove the stopper or cloth from the drain opening. Hold the kettle close to the drain to minimize splashing and pour the boiling water in a continuous, steady stream directly into the center. The intense heat liquefies the loosened grease and flushes the broken-up debris through the P-trap.
- โข Entire volume of hot water pours down the drain without backing up into the basin
- โข Steam rising directly out of the empty drain opening
- โข Pouring from high above the sink, causing scalding hot water to splash onto hands and counters
Verify Drainage with Cold Tap Flush
Turn the kitchen faucet to cold at full blast and let it run for 60 seconds. Observe the water flow at the drain opening to ensure it evacuates immediately without hesitation. A healthy drain should create a small visible vortex or whirlpool and pull all incoming water straight down.
- โข Cold tap running at full pressure with zero water pooling in the bottom of the sink
- โข A clear visible swirl or mini-whirlpool forming over the drain opening
- โข Assuming the drain is cleared after hot water without testing full continuous faucet pressure

Don’t have everything?
- No Funnel? Rolled cone of heavy cardstock or aluminum foil
- No Sink stopper? Damp kitchen towel folded tightly over the drain opening
